Nab Cottage

Dates from 1702. Home to the Simpson family whose daughter Margaret became the wife of Thomas de Quincey.

Later Nab Cottage became home to Hartley Coleridge (eldest son of Samuel Taylor Coleridge) who rented the house from 1840 until his death there in1849.

Hartley was a poet, essayist, biographer and a (not particularly happy) teacher. Rusticated from Oriel College, Oxford, Hartley had been a functioning alcoholic since student days. He died of bronchitis at Nab Cottage aged 53.
